Project Ara Modular Smartphone By Google

During the second Project Ara developer conference yesterday, Google revealed the most advanced version of the modular smartphone and announced plans for a release later this year.

In the new video above, Google’s Advanced Technology and Projects (ATAP) group demonstrates how you can easily swap and/or replace different modules — which includes cameras, batteries, processors, speakers, and even a new screen if necessary.

The modules can be inserted and removed at any time, even when the device is on, and have replaceable “shells” which you can customize with photos or images. A pilot program will be launching later this year in Puerto Rico, with a global launch sometime after. For more information regarding Project Ara head over to the platform’s website.
